Organic Lettuce: Romaine - Rouge D'Hiver Planting Instructions:
Direct sow in the early spring. Seeds can also be planted in the fall. Plant 8" apart and 1/8 inch below the surface. Space rows 12 to 18" apart and keep the soil well-watered during dry periods. Rouge D'Hiver Lettuce does best with full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Grow time is 55 to 65 days. Because lettuce is shallow-rooted, be careful not to disturb the soil around the plants when weeding. Plants need to be watered deeply at least once a week, and more frequently in times of drought. Mulch with a layer of compost or clean straw to help retain moisture.

Organic Lettuce: Romaine - Rouge D'Hiver Harvesting Instructions:
For the best quality, harvest lettuce early. Allowing lettuce to grow too long allows it to become bitter and tough. It is best to harvest in the morning or evening, when the leaves are crisp, sweet, and full of moisture. Fresh lettuce can be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days after harvest.

Did You Know This About Romaine Rouge D'Hiver Lettuce?
In America, this type of lettuce is called Red Romaine. Rouge D'Hiver means "red of winter." The lettuce gets its name from its tolerance of cold temperatures.
