Let me tell you a story.

Like other stories I've shared recently, this one contains a powerful lesson about preparedness, which is why I bring you this one today. Sometimes the simplest, strangest things teach you a lot about preparedness. For example, recently I've told you about the lessons I learned from fallen trees and toilet paper!

However, unlike those stories, this didn't happen recently. In fact, this may be the first preparedness lesson I ever learned.

A Ride with Grandpa

When I was 9-years-old, I didn't have a clue about preparedness. I had no way of knowing that many years down the road, I'd develop a deep passion for living a self-reliant lifestyle, off the grid, in northern Idaho. But the lesson I learned then means even more to me now.

It all started when my grandpa asked me, "Hey Matt, wanna go for a ride?"

We hopped into his old Chevy pickup, and as we got a bit down the road, he handed me a blank envelope with a letter inside. He said, "I want you to address that letter for me while I drive. I'll tell you what to write."

"But grandpa," I said, "I don't have a pen."

He smiled and pulled a pen from his shirt pocket. He handed it to me and said, "Always carry a pen."

He told me that you never knew when you would need one. To write a quick thank you note. To cash a check. To jot down a great business idea. Or to give your number to the pretty girl across the room.

That last little tip proved very useful and helped me meet the woman who became my wife.

It's More than Preparedness, It's Embracing Opportunity

What does this all have to do with emergency preparedness?

Sure, a pen can have some handy survival uses, but that's not what today's lesson is about. It's about adjusting the way we think about preparedness. Simply put, it's an attitude adjustment. 

For my grandfather, carrying a pen meant he was ready for all of life's opportunities - big and small. He was a simple, hardworking man. He couldn't afford to let something pass him by.
