The Three Little Pigs & Preparedness

A couple of weeks ago, I sent loyal customers like you a note about the one "preparedness mistake to avoid." If you missed it, click here to read it.

I was happy to see that a lot of you took that message to heart. It's always a wise choice to take a step back and think about what we're truly preparing for.

Recently, I came across another incredibly simple way to think about your approach to preparedness

In fact, it happened the other night when I was reading my daughter a bedtime story. Can you guess which fairy tale I read to her?

Well, I'll give you a hint: the morals in this story have a lot of parallels to the way folks approach preparedness. Click the link below to find out:

I'll cut right to the chase: the story I was reading my daughter was The Three Little Pigs. You remember the story?

Well, I wanted to break down this short fable in terms of preparedness.

The First Two Little Pigs

Now, since this story is so brief, a lot of people skip past the failure of the two little pigs and go straight to the triumph of the third little pig.

But you have to know exactly where those first two went wrong. After all, how many pigs do you know that can build a house out of hay or sticks? That's pretty self-reliant if you ask me.

All kidding aside, they were at least wise enough to build up some protection from the elements. Just not enough for the Big Bad Wolf.

You see, a lot of folks approach preparedness exactly like this. They build something sufficient - maybe based on FEMA guidelines or a few internet searches. And this is a good place to start. They're prepared for power outages, weather events, and other short-term emergencies.

Preparing for the Big Bad Wolf

But, in today's world, you need a preparedness plan built out of bricks, not hay or sticks. That third pig was wise because he knew he needed the right materials to keep the Big Bad Wolf from blowing his house down.

The Big Bad Wolf doesn't just represent big, long-term emergencies, like nuclear fallout, cyber attack and more. The Big Bad Wolf also huffs and puffs, right? Well, the huffing and puffing are the added pressures you face during a major crisis. I touched on this in my last email - you could have extra visitors, spilled food and more.

But, you could also have a Big Bad Wolf in the form of a thief who wants to take your emergency supply. In a crisis, people can become desperate and dangerous - it's unfortunate but true.

Again, this is why it's always wise to have a preparedness plan built out of bricks. Remember, there is no such thing as being over-prepared.
